Day-diary written on the 12th June 1937 by a male Decorator from London.

“As I left the ‘job’ I had a fortnight ago I was not working Saturday, so that under the circumstances the day was normal. I rose at 7.30 and dug my friends out and cleared off to obtain my morning paper. My first look was to the Wanted and Vacant page, as under the present urge that is more urgent to me than the ‘bumping off’ of Russian Military Leaders. After all if you knock off the heads there’s promotion down to the bottom.

After breakfast, having received no replies to any late correspondence I volunteered to do the shopping. I voted for salads and other hot weather food and we expected Sunday to be at least hot. So I sauntered forth and strolled down the ‘Cut’. Even at that early hour (9.30) there were quite an appreciable crowd thronging the shops and stalls and being Saturday a large percentage of children. I noticed that the sales went on very steadily without that frantic effort on the part of stall holders and salesmen to call attention to their wares.

I made the required purchases + noting the sky was becoming overcast I decided to return + finish off the rest of my buying locally. A little money must go a long way + if you have little money at least you have "time" to wait till prices drop. So that in actual practical economies time + money mean the same thing."
