Day-diary from 12th July 1937 by a female teacher working in an infant school.
“My class comprised of both boys and girls has an average age of 6 yrs. I have held this post since March of this year, only. The compulsory working hours are short consequently I have quite a large amount of time for doing extra things connected with my work, for performing public duties and for recreation."
"The life of the district is centred chiefly on business interests- catering for the needs of the people of the town and district. Most of the people are engaged in office-work, shop-work, factory-work (wool or boots and shoes), ironstone working or industries connected with agriculture. Perhaps the most widespread interest of the people of the district is hunting."
"In religion the greater percentage are non-conformist and in politics Conservative. No one in the town is really a stranger to anyone and everyone is of a surprisingly friendly and hospitable disposition.”
