Terms and Conditions - Frequently Asked Questions
What rights am I granting the MOCO Project to use my work?
You are granting the MOCO Project, the Mass Observation Archive and any future partner or individual that the MOA deems appropriate, permission to use your work, for any purpose (commercial or non-commercial) that they deem reasonable, subject to the approval of the Mass Observation Board of Trustees.
What rights do I retain in my work when I submit it to the MOCO Project?
If you submit any content to or share any material with the MOCO Project (including any text, photographs, graphics, or video) you will still retain copyright of your work which means you can continue to use your content as you like including the ability to also allow others to use it.
What do I need to do when submitting material to the MOCO Project?
When you submit content to or share material with the MOCO Project, you must only submit/share your own original content.
If your content clearly identifies anyone else you will need to ensure that they have consented to the content being used by the MOCO Project for the purposes for which you submitted it and/or any other uses by the MOCO Project. Where your content clearly identifies children under the age of 16 you must ensure that their parent or guardian has provided the consent set out above.
The MOCO Project also requires that you do not submit/share any content that is defamatory, offensive or unlawful in any way. Any inappropriate content will be rejected or taken down by the MOCO Project. If in doubt, please do not share your content with the MOCO Project.
Will the MOCO Project credit me when it uses my material?
The MOCO Project will endeavour to credit any submitted material, where the contributer has indicated that they wish for us to do so on their submission form.
If you would prefer for the MOCO Project not to credit you for whatever reason please let us know when submitting your material.
Will the MOCO Project amend my contribution at all?
In the majority of instances, the MOCO Project does not amend, edit or alter any material submitted to or shared with the MOCO Project. Due to technical or operational limitations the MOCO Project may have to slightly amend content such as cropping images to be able to use them. The MOCO Project will endeavour not to make any significant editorial amendments to your work without your consent.
As the content submitted to the MOCO website will be open access the MOCO Project will clearly state that third party usage of the material must also agree not to alter your submissions in any material way.
How long will the MOCO Project keep my contribution?
The MOCO Project will display your contribution on the MOCO website for a minimum of three years. Your submission will also be donated to the Mass Observation Archive to be kept indefinitely.
Can I quote from the material?
Yes –anyone is entitled to use the material for Educational Purposes (means for the purpose of education, teaching, distance learning, private study and/or research) but not for Commercial Purposes (i.e. selling or reselling the material or using it for any commercial gain), with the exception for the Humprey Spender Bolton photographs, which may not be used at all.
