Day-diary from the 12th February 1937 by a male teacher from Cumberland.
“As the Headmaster came into lunch, he slipped into my side-pocket a copy of the ‘New Era’ dealing with problems of Marriage and Sex. Why? A nice gesture of friendliness, anyway.
Menu for lunch: Excellent veg soup (boys ate more than girls); Cold beef; baked potatoes, butter and beetroot. Apples.
Conversation at my table at lunch: Almost all inaudible to me, as I was serving at a table with some of the senior girls who are very much in-turned. I asked them towards the end of the meal ‘what was the most important thing happening in Keswick or the neighbourhood today?’ None of them could think of anything at all, except the most un-intellectual of them all, who with pleasure and spontaneity mentioned the fact that there was a dance this evening in Thirlmere village. On going out form lunch, the boys and (especially) girls were particularly lively, polite and pleasant in forming gangway for me.”
“Then I biked home through the rain, stopping at two shops on the way…chemist’s and grocer’s. At the former, had an interesting spot of conversation…starting with the weather, of course, but getting on to the future of humanity…”
