Life in a cafe in Portland, Dorset
An observation of September 12th 2010, submitted by a 72 year old female retiree from Weymouth.
I observed life from the cafe at Portland Dorset on Sunday afternoon
On the 12th September 2010, my son, his partner and myself drove overe the Chesil beach road to Portland. It was a truly beautiful day, blue sky, white clouds and sunshine. A bit blowy but we were on Portland! We made for the little cafe on the promenade overlooking the Chesil beach and the sea. The sea looked magnificent and the sound of the waves crashing onto the shingle is a true Portland sound. This little cafe does mainly fish and we ordered mackerel pate and I had the haddock chowder. With a glass of wine, some bread and the sound of the sea, it was a meal fit for a king. The sun had encouraged lots of people to enjoy the afternoon and there was a lovely relaxed atmosphere about the prom. People were strolling and chatting, there were some fisherman on the beach and the seagulls were making themselves heard. Strange that here we were, at peace with mankind, and elsewhere in the world, horrible things were happening. This was a memorable three hours on a September Sunday - nothing much happened - but it was a happy day.
