32 year old female IT professional from Sittingbourne, Kent.

Question 1. Give your reasons and analyse your motives for living in the district where you do live.

We live in Sittingbourne, Kent because we needed work access to The City and this was as close to London as we could afford, or wanted to be! We moved here from out of the area without any idea what it was like before we moved - just the notion that Kent was 'the Garden of England'.

Question 2. In what ways do you consider yourself different from your neighbours?

Sittingbourne is a very insular town that families seem to have been settled in for many generations - as a consequence we still feel very much like outsiders after living here for nine years. We live in a road that ranges from large, affluent households to small terraced, rented houses and I think we're somewhere in the middle. Most of our neighbours are older than us and we don't really know any of them except to nod 'hello' as we pass.

Question 3. When you go into pubs, which bar do you use and why?

We very rarely go to pubs as we have young children and no family in the area so it's difficult to get a babysitter. I sometimes eat at local pubs for lunch at work, such as The Beauty of Bath and Jenny Wren, and my husband belongs to the Woodcombe Sports Club, where he plays pool.

Question 4. What priced seats do you use at the cinema and why?

As far as I'm aware cinema seats are all the same price! We tend to sit in the front row of the tiered seats as there's a barrier in front that you can put your feet up on and it's easier to get in and out if the kids need the loo! When I go to the theatre though I tend to aim for the medium-priced tickets. I like to be in the stalls so that you feel part of the performance but far enough back that you get a good view.

Question 5. What forms of food, drink or amusement are thought “infra dig”* or not quite the things in your circles?

I don't think there's anything that we'd consider 'below us' in terms of entertainment or food. We often eat kebabs which receive disparaging comments unless eaten under the influence of alcohol! The sports club my husband belongs to is generally regarded as 'rough' by the people I work with but he enjoys the company there. In fact many areas of Sittingbourne are regarded as 'rough' based on years' old reputations that have been handed down - if you haven't grown up here though you're unaware of them!

Question 6. Are you sensitive on the subject of accent and have you made any attempt to change your own?

I am fairly sensitive to the subject of accent if only because mine is commented on quite a lot. I don't think I sound particularly posh but others seem to. I have never attempted to change my accent but I do tend to swear quite a lot which I'm sure is a result of trying to 'blend in' with the people I'm talking to!

Question 7. Do you make a habit of using the following words and phrases? If not, what is your reaction when they are used by others?

The only words from the list I'd use would be Okay or bye-bye. I hadn't realised how often I say 'Okay' until my father-in-law kept correcting my children to say 'yes' instead! My grandad's nickname was 'Chum' so I consider that a little old-fashioned. 'Mate' is a word that I dislike being used about me and it's certainly not one I'd use. 'Cheerioh' seems to me to be contrived - almost as though the user is being falsely chirpy or pretentious! 'Ta' and 'Okidoke' are similar. I've never heard 'Tooleoo' before! 'Not half' and 'pal' sound regional - as though they should be used with an accent I don't have!
